Originally released in 1982, EnglishSettlement stands as awatershed work in XTC’s catalogue- bridging the gap between their earlier jagged, frenetic newwave sound and the more pastoral, refined, and ambitiousmusic they would go on to create. Recorded during a period ofpersonal and professional upheaval, the album arrived justbefore Andy Partridge’s stage fright forced the band toabandon touring, and before the departure of drummer TerryChambers. Yet, despite – or perhaps because of – thisinstability, XTC crafted one of their finest and most enduringworks.
